My Memorial Weekend

May 30th, 2006

On thursday of last week Bob and I decided to go backpacking. Usually you want a week or so to prepare for a backpacking trip, even if it's only a three day trip, so when we decided thursday afternoon to leave friday morning things got a little rushed. Two trips to REI and a couple trips to the grocery store later, we were on the road. Our destination was the Sespe wilderness, in the mountains east of Ventura.

After way too much traffic through L.A. and one fabulous stop at Arby's for lunch, we finally ended up at the trailhead, at dark. The first night was spent falling asleep to the tune of about a million Arroyo toads. Anyhow, Here are a some of the photos that I took from the weekend...

Sespe Creek.

This shot was taken from our first campsite. The tent was ten feet to my left!

The little black blob on the left in the meadow is Bob walking along the trail. Just to the right is a drop-off of about 300 feet down to the river.

This is at our second campsite.

Second campsite scenery again.

This little guy didn't want his picture taken so he ran into the grass and tried to hide, I got him though! (It's a horned lizard)

Grand totals for the weekend: 5 blisters, 3 ticks, 1 toad in backpack, 1 lizard on backpack, zero phone calls, lots of fun!

Mahjong and Beer

May 26th, 2006

So my friend Bob and I play Mahjong. If you don't know what Mahjong is, look it up on wikipedia. Basically it is an old Chinese game that is played similar to rummy. Most of the people that play it are old Chinese ladies and they use it to gamble. The game is quite fun and VERY complicated. Enough about the game. The other night Bob, Howie, Jenn Weiss and I went to our favourite sushi retaurant, Meijo Sushi, to play Mahjong for 5 hours. It was a blast and here is my favourite shot of the evening.

Padres Game

May 26th, 2006

I went to a Padres game a couple of weeks ago and just got the film developed. It was a good time, however we lost the game. Here are some pictures of people. I love having a 300mm lens because I can take close pics of ppl and they have no idea I am taking photos of them. Makes me feel sneaky :)

He films me, I film him, that's how it works!

I think this guy caught me, but I don't think he minds.

Some random hottie that was sitting in front of me. YeeHaw!

The story behind the WMS building is pretty cool, look it up on Google!

hollow

May 25th, 2006

Words are hollow, I am a fool for believing what people say. Words are nothing more than a means of manipulation. I just got off the phone with someone, they said I seemed unhappy, which I am, I'm really pissed off right now and don't even care. I'm not entirely sure why, but I have a few ideas, but for right now I am stuck, and I'm thinking to various things people have told me which all seem real at the time and after taking a couple steps back seem like nothing more than a pile of crap fed to me in order to keep me sufficed for the moment, pacified in what are apparently my own ideas, led maybe by the indecision or even fears of other people. Words are hollow, they are a vehicle of destruction ripping through the flesh of my heart.

It is always the optimistic that get screwed for their faith.

It's not what it looks like, I swear!

May 25th, 2006

While folding my laundry this morning something interesting happened. I found a little pink thong! No, it doesn't belong to me, it must have been left in the dryer by one of my neighbors. So the first thing I think of is what if I was married and did my laundry and my wife decided to fold it and found someone else's seductive article of clothing. That might be a little hard to explain, especially since I wouldn't have had any idea what she was talking about.

I can imagine coming home from work and my wife meeting me at the front door with a not so friendly look. She would hold up the tiny thong and say "Who the HELL does this belong to?" As she begins to toss all my clothes out the front door and slam the door in my face.

So I have decided that I don't think I could handle the stress of marrying a jealous woman, so I'm not going to. That will make up and coming scenarios like this mornings instance much easier to deal with.

One of the ways CherryPy 3 will rock

May 9th, 2006

Looks like CherryPy 3 will be significantly faster than CP 2.2. Here are some quick benchmark (Apache ab) stats from my little Win2k laptop. The first three are from the same test (1000 requests, 14 byte response body, 10 server threads), for 10 to 50 client threads:

req/sec x threadsmsec/req x threadskb/sec x threads

These two are from a different test (1000 requests, 50 client threads, 10 server threads), for response sizes of 10 bytes, 100, 1K, 10K, 100K, and 100M: req/sec x byteskb/sec x bytes

I believe the improvement comes from three areas. First, the lowercase_api flag and checks are no longer needed. Second, filters are no longer called just to see if they're turned on. Third, all of the configs and special attributes are now looked up once, inline with the page handler (i.e, controller method) lookup.

I can't wait to run the benchmark suite on a real server. :)

Golden State Classic

May 9th, 2006

This past weekend I played in the Golden State Classic, a National Tour event. The GSC is the largest tournament in Southern California. I wanted to play in this event because I enjoy the course it is played at, but the entry fee was $132 which I didn't have. Anyhow to make a long story short, Timmy Gill and DiscGolftv.com made it financially possible for me to play in this event.

So I played well, really well, and I placed 15th out of 53. That was good enough to net me $217, which I gladly accepted, which means I can no longer play in any amateur tournaments, but more importantly, I am now a "professional athlete". That's fun to say, so I'll say it again...I'm a professional athlete. Sweet. Anyhow, here are the results if anyone is interested...

Golden State Classic

Next I'm flying up to Oregon for another huge tournament there. I'm leaving wednesday the 17th and will be competing the 19th, 20th, and 21st. Wish me luck, and hopefully I'll bring home some more $$$$.

ARGH!

May 4th, 2006

So think of the most possibly agitating thing you can think of. Great! That's exactly what happened to me today! There is NOTHING more agitating than spending a dollar on a certain soda pop and have the machine kick out the WRONG frickin' drink. All I wanted was a DrPepper. And it spit out a Diet DrPepper at me! The nerve of this stupid machine!

That's not all, I decided to give it another go since I really wanted a DrPepper, and evidently the entire section slotted for DP is now Diet DP! ARGH#O#@%$A^@@F@!!@$^A^*GHHH!

Very, very agitating, I have supreme animosity for the Coke machine in our office now!

It's a LOMO!

May 4th, 2006

I have decided to get a new camera.

Since I can't afford the 20D ($1200 camera) that I want. I've decided to go the opposite route and buy an antique Russian camera. It's called a Lubitel 166, and it freakin' ROCKS! I have been more and more interested in old school photography ever since I started using a 35mm SLR back in december. It just intrigues me to know end some of the things that these old "outdated" cameras can do without the help from digital post-shot manipulation. Plus they produced images that are so beautiful and archaic that can't be recreated digitally.

Needless to say, I'm a little excited. I haven't bought the camera just yet, as it will be about $50 after the shipping from the Ukraine, but as soon as I get it I will start pounding out some shots and putting them up at Aesthetic-Mindset for all to see.

Loving Film!

Subway

April 28th, 2006

So I just bought lunch as Subway and had a funny interaction with the lady serving me. Here's the dialogue:

Lady: Welcome to Subway...(blah blah)...What would you like?
Me: I would like a foot long Steak and Cheese sandwich.
Lady: And what kind of bread would you like with that?
Me: Asiago Cheese Bread, please.
Lady: (turns around and checks the bread in the oven, then faces me again) That bread is still too hot, so if we use it we can't toast it.
Me: That's fine I don't need it toasted.
Lady: (blank stare as if she has never heard anyone say they don't need their bread toasted before!) We can still use that bread but the steak NEEDS to be toasted.

**awkward pause while we look at eachother in bewilderment**

Me: So then we can't use that bread can we?
Lady: We can use that bread, but we can't toast it, but the meat needs to be toasted.
Me: (I pause and give her a funny "what the hell are you talking about" smirk) How about if I just choose a different bread.
Lady: That would work, what bread would you like then?

Wow!
